Samsung Electronics unveiled a new generative artificial intelligence model, suggesting its imminent integration into their devices. The concept of generative AI, championed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI and ChatGPT, has ignited competition among global technology leaders. Its foundation lies in large language models, which are extensively trained using vast amounts of data.
Samsung named its AI technology Samsung Gauss, paying homage to the renowned mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, who pioneered the theory of normal distribution, the cornerstone of machine learning and AI. This AI system encompasses several features. The primary feature, Samsung Gauss Language, acts as a generative language model, assisting with email composition, content translation, and intelligent device control to enhance the overall consumer experience when integrated into products.
Another feature enables speedy code writing for in-house software developers, while the third feature, Samsung Gauss Image, possesses the ability to generate and modify images. Samsung confirmed that Samsung Gauss is currently utilized for enhancing employee productivity, but it will soon be extended to various Samsung product applications, ushering in novel user experiences.
Samsung could potentially be one of the pioneering smartphone manufacturers to introduce generative AI in their devices. Daniel Araujo, Samsung's vice president of the mobile business, mentioned during the company's earnings call last month that generative AI technology is likely to be available to customers in the coming year. In contrast, Apple, Samsung's primary competitor in the smartphone industry, has not yet unveiled their own generative AI product. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, briefly acknowledged their involvement in generative AI during the recent earnings call but refrained from providing further details.
